| Thank you very much for your comment. I really appreciate the time you took to read through my notes. I'm sorry for not being able to include the sun in the picture. I only had the telephoto lens on this trip and it does exactly what it says: it zooms from 70 mm to 200 mm (112 to 320 mm on my EOS 30d body). This would have been a much too longer lens to include the sun in the photo. Besides I wouldn't like my camera's sensor to take a full blow by exposing it to the bright sun (I don't use filters), even if behind a thin cirro-stratus cloud. Would you? The resulting picture would have been a bright, overexposed area of the sky with no reference in it since my telephoto lens wouldn't be able to capture the relatively far ground below. Probably not even the sundog. Maybe I misclassified the phenomenon since I am not a physicist of the atmosphere. I still think it was a sundog, even if not that pronounced. If you have a better explanation for it please let me know your opinion. I'm always open for learning. However, I've been a paraglider pilot for about ten years and I know pretty much about the weather and meteorology. I can name a cloud in an instant and I assure you that the sky was covered up to 4-5 eights with cirro-stratus clouds. Eventually the cirro-stratus layer became a thicker alto-stratus cloud which finally developed into a huge stratus monster. This front system brought the first snow this year. However, next time I'll bring my wide-angle lens to be able to capture the whole scene. That means I'll have to haul about three kilos of photo equipment through the mountains :) My poor neck! Happy shooting! Eddie |
