The name you give is cetainly this moth, the common name you give for the caterpillar though very apropriate, in the UK we have applied to another moth (Artia caja) which has caterpilllars covered in long hairs and the children call them "Wooley Bears" and are often seen walking across paths on their way to else where.
In the UK it is certainly a day flying moth though there is a minnor referance to being active at night as well which I hadnt noticed before, (its in small print and I use reading glasses, well thats my excuse and I`am sticking to it )
The whole note was quiet an early one before I started writting half a book of information.
hope this make things clearer than muddy water. yours Robert.
