I should have mentioned this in the note above, but forgot. I've had better success converting color photos to B&W by using Photoshop's channel mixer in monochrome. Previously I had always converted to B&W simply by desaturating. That often left photos looking flat and lifeless, needing a lot of correction to bring it back to the tones it had originally. The channel mixer however gives you complete control over the luminosity of each of the red, blue, and green areas of the photo. If you can get the right mix of the three channels, it really helps give a more natural balance and preserves the original highlights and shadows much better.
