The bar is the frame that supports the wire to protect the photographers. This shot was taken through the side of it, but there are a few holes to put lenses through on the other side. The keeper can also put small parts of food through there, but he usually drops the food in from above this structure. They seem to enjoy whole chickens, though they have been freshly skinned and gutted before they are put in there. They told me that removing the feathers makes it easier to keep the area clean and prevents disease if there were any on the outside of the dead chicken.
