Thanks for your comment. No, I have yet to go to Bario ... planning to spend some time there and a few other "must-see-vintage-Sarawak" in 2005. I heard Bario have proper guesthouses now as well as internet connection, perhaps I am too late.

The headgear in the photo is either Kelabit/Orang Ulu. These days most folks sport either Nike or Adidas ... the oldman is rather unique in a way. Must admit that I was only aware of the traditional weaved headgear when I spot the old man at the Miri market. Sad to say I am as guilty as the other ignorant West Malaysians in Miri (then!).

I must say I really enjoy your series on the long-house. If you ever pass by Miri, there's Rumah Chong in Niah that you must visit. The tuai rumah takes joy in entertaining guests, will even set up cultural events if given advance notice.
