| Hello everybody Manually correcting errors in French placenames takes a lot of time which could perhaps be saved by if everyone followed these few guidelines: Spelling placenames * If you're not absolutely sure of the spelling of a placename, check it in Quid-Villes & Villages, or Michelin (the name of the region should be sufficient here) - if necessary add these sites to your bookmarks. * Do not use abbreviations (for example La Ferté-sous-Jouarre instead of La Ferté-ss-Jouarre, Saint-Tropez instead of St-Tropez) * Choose the closest commune to a place - same if two communes are grouped together, choose the name of the new commune Capitalisation and the leading article * All substantives and adjectives must be capitalised (examples: Saint-Étienne, La Grande-Motte, Le Petit-Bornand-les-Glières). * Prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs are capitalised if at the beginning of a placename, and are not capitalised if within a name. An exception to this rule is "Hors" which is always capitalised. (Examples: Inchy-en-Artois, Chaillé-sous-les-Ormeaux, Foucaucourt-Hors-Nesle, Houlbec-près-le-Gros-Theil...) * Articles should only be capitalised if they are at the start of a placename. Otherwise small letters are used. (Examples: Crèvecoeur-le-Grand, Le Mans, Chaillé-sous-les-Ormeaux, La Grave, Sassetot-le-Mauconduit) Hyphenation * Hyphens should be systematically used except after an leading article. (Example: Choisy-le-Roi, Le Mans, La Rochelle, Pas-de-Calais...) NOTE: Accents currently do not enter into the system and apostrophes are replaced by a blank character: examples:Cap-d'Ail > Cap-d Ail - Presqu'Ile-de-Gien > Presqu Ile-de-Giens - La Roque-d'Anthéron > La Roque-d Antheron Thank you in advance Best regards - Viviane |
