I increased the mid-tones and contrast then ran through Neat Image, then sharpened just a bit +1

Cropped a bit from the left and top. Gamma-corrected red/green/blue (1.2) to bring just a little light into the shadow. Slightly boosted saturation, sharpened, and added frame.

I increased the contrast slightly, used a brush to darken the nearby rocks (and then cropped them out), sharpened. Lastly, I cropped out the road, some of the sky and half of the tree. It's just a different version. I still like the orignial very much.

I had adjusted the Levels of the overall picture, 'painted' the walls by hue, adjusted the color balance of the vegetations to more Green and Cyan. Finally, I sprayed the sky with white by using 10% pressure of the airbrush.

I used an enhancement tool in PSP called clarify which is a sort of sharpening tool. I think it also tweaks the contrast and brightness a bit to bring out colors better, but that's only my guess.
