- My name is Stephen Mahlstedt and I'm an amateur photographer from the Washington, D.C. area. I work full-time as a software developer, and photography is one of my many passions that I pursue when I'm not at work. In addition to photography, I love to hike and camp, mountain bike, get tattooed, and play guitar...and do anything with my girlfriend and "partner in crime", Cassie.
Several years ago, between 2002 and late 2004, I was really into photography and spent most of my free time searching for subjects and traveling around on photo vacations. Many things happened in 2004 and early 2005 that directed my attention elsewhere, and I stopped shooting photos for a while, aside from a handful on a couple of vacations. I eventually sold all of my high-end Canon digital gear and pretty much stopped with photography all together...until recently. My girlfriend and I started spending a lot of time in nature, hiking around a lot and camping. Being back out in nature again flipped a switch in my head, and I found myself missing photography and wanting to get back into it again. I decided not to go crazy with equipment this time. For now I'm using a Nikon D60 and a Tamron 18-250mm lens. At some point I'd like to procure a wider lens and maybe a macro, but that's about it. I can easily backpack with this small amount of gear, and I want to keep it that way. It feels really good to be shooting again. I feel a little rusty, but hopefully that feeling won't last too long. So, for now, most of the photos that I post were taken between 2002 and 2004. I'm hoping to start capturing some interesting images again soon.
