- Based in rural Western Maryland, Paul Durham has been a photographer for over 30 years. He is self taught and his work reflects a lifetime love affair with parks and heritage sites.
Paul's career includes 27 years as a park ranger and conservation professional. His Scot, Irish and Welsh heritage frames his focus on the American Appalachian region and Ireland. His ancestors and many of his current relatives have lived in Virginia's Appalachian Mountain area since the 1700s. Some also migrated from Wales and Ireland during the mid-1800s.
His recent work includes assignments in Haiti to document the effects of the January 2010 earthquake, the daily struggles of the survivors, and the work of various non-profit and relief organizations.
Paul believes that the meanings and stories inherent to a visual image are powerful. This belief shapes his work. His approach spans the traditional black and white styles of the early landscape photographers to the unique perspectives, patterns and color palettes that characterize our world.
