Rice — my endless lesson /45/ (2) ngythanh

 my teacher | ngythanh
(8356) [2006-09-13 06:11:25] | This is Frank Prislovsky of Stuttgart, Arkansas. He is a rice farmer with some 4,000 acres. While my two mails to Stuttgard Chamber of Commerce asking for help never get a reply, Frank stopped his combine spending time to give me the answers and explanations to my poor knowledge about rice farming in America.
During the pursuit on the topic of "rice in America" in the last few months, I only saw american-made combines. A top-of-the-line combine manufactured by American company like Case International or John Deere may cost around US$225,000.00 a piece. But I saw two Australian-made New Holland CR970 in Frank's farm at Stuttgart as shown in this picture. Each of them costs US$250,000.00. Do the imported combines perform better? I have asked that question and the answer was a smile. He told me that there must be some good reasons for him to spend the equivalence of a regular sedan on each machine, but he declined to make a comparison.
So my lesson will continue... |

Bamboo varieties under tests | ngythanh
(8356) [2006-09-10 06:58:39] | | In order to keep two animals from hungry, Memphis Zoo leased 10 acres of land from Agricenter to cultivate six species of bamboo. More than 20 different varieties of bamboo grown here are under tests for nutrition and palatability over the course of the project. This cultivation research is well cared by both Memphis Zoo’s and Mississippi State University staffs. |

10 acres of bamboo for pandas | ngythanh
(8356) [2006-09-10 06:53:56] | | In order to keep two animals from hungry, Memphis Zoo leased 10 acres of land from Agricenter to cultivate six species of bamboo. At least three of these different species may be given to the pandas in any one day, but a total of more than 20 different bamboos grown here are tested for nutrition and palatability over the course of the project. This cultivation research is well cared by both Memphis Zoo’s and Mississippi State University staffs. |

 Ratoon Rice | ngythanh
(8356) [2006-08-18 05:01:35] | Farmer Gary Skalicky of Ganado, Texas patiently explained to me the benefit of “ratoon”. Ratooning — the practice of harvesting grain from tillers originating from the stubble of a previously harvested crop (main crop), enhances rice grain yields without increasing land area because it provides higher resource use efficiency per unit of land area and per unit of time.
Even though ratoon rice is a source of additional income, an adequate harvesting system of the main crop is necessary to make it economically viable. |

 Hani minority people | ngythanh
(8356) [2006-08-17 03:44:03] | This Hani minority girl was playing "mouse-and-cat" behind the earth mounds with her siblings during their help to parent over the farming work outside Qingkou Tribe.
She was shy to stranger, and "allergic" to camera. She was trying to get away from my lens but I was lucky to be a second or two ahead. |
