To bring out the snow in the foreground I use:
1. new adjustment layer - select curve. Drag the curve down until you can see the detail of the snow. The whole image will become dark but the part with snow will look better. Click ok.
2.Go to edit - fill - use black - click ok. The image will now appear as it appear before step one.
3.choose brush tool - brush over the snow. Only the portion that you brush will bring out the detail as in step 1.
4.Flatten. You are done with this part.
Sharpen to finish the job. This is where I think the low resolution image doesn't work so well - causing extra hallo effect, artifact etc. You can see the effect on the second tree on the right.
Note: normally the shadow and highlight tool will do the job of bringing out the detail in the snow if the snow part is not too bright.
