| Intro: | I'm a Danish anthropology student, and currently writing my thesis based on a fieldwork in Shanghai in 2005/06. Here, I bought an EOS 350D, and started bringing it around the streets of the city and on trips around the country. Most of my pics posted here will therefore be from different parts of China. TE is a very interesting place, because it teaches us about the world through 1) the great photos and comments made by enthusiastic individual members, 2) the cultural diversity in how we perceive and describe the world through our cameras and our notes. What is it that make us focus on and frame a particular slice of reality? Many photos here are of landmarks and "famous" tourist attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Taj Majal in Agra, The Forbidden City in Beijing, Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Pyramids in Giza, etc., etc. Those pics often get high "scores", because they ARE impressing, even though they probably teach us more about the global tourist industry than about local culture. Nonetheless, I faithfully go to all of these tourist attractions and take pictures myself, when I'm travelling. While I would never bother to photograph or even go to the "official" landmark of Copenhagen, it seems that they further away I go from home, the more captured I get by the "obvious" beautiful sights, which have been pre-selected as such by the tourist industry. This is probably because I have no immediate reference and very shallow understanding of what is "specatacular" in the local context. I find that some of the pictures teaching me the most are the ones made by locals, who may go access places and situations, which we travellers rarely have the chance to. They may tell us the really interesting stories about the places, they photograph. As travellers, we usually have limited knowledge about the language, culture, history and society of the places, we visit. Therefore, we often make generalizations. Consequently, I find as good travelling notes, the ones which tell first-hand stories about personal experiences and motivations for the pictures, (rather than secondary Wiki-info). In my opinion, the interesting pics and notes come from the backstreets of the cities, the great personal travelling experiences, the everyday life - the personal stories. Those are the ideals. In practice, I will probably deviate from them many times. After all, I am just here to learn. To all you great photographers, observers and storytellers out there - thanks for teaching me! --- NEXT TRIPS: Iceland: 26/7 - 6/8, 2008. China: 27/8, 2008 - 1/8, 2009 | |
