the technically better image of my friend ..as he passed across the road from me .. this is cropped a bit but he was so close that with my 400mm he couldn't fit in the frame ..

in photoshop
create empt layer mode overlay
graduated white/transparent from foreground to horizon to give more light on foreground
then remove noise and create a curves with more contrast
unsharp mask

I just used auto level to start with to add brightness.
On a curves layer I used the white picker on the whitest bit I could find and the whites got whiter. Behind the horizon was over-exposed then, so I added a mask on that part.
To take away the brown cast altogether I just clicked monotone on the channel mixer tool, but didn't move any sliders.
