I thought the original was photographed in the wrong light. Great subject, worth a rescue!
Viewing the individual RGB channels, the green had the most detail so I used it for the greyscale conversion.
Dodge tool lightened up some of the shadows carefully.
Converted to duotone using gold as the second hue, then cropped away the harsh shadows.
