First, I added a white frame with CS2 because I don't like the contrast with TE's awesome background color...
Then I ran the shot in NeatImage: reduced the noise and sharpened a bit.
Hope it's what chrisj meant...

Used tone curve to increase the yellow and reduce the red. I hope this one works to bring out a little more detail in the shadow. Color changes is based on my preference and not what you see & feel out there. Software: PS CS3. |

(2949) [2006-09-13 18:22:45] [2] | Inspired by other workshops and this highly athmospheric image I also tried a workshop. In the background I select the people and their elements and changed the brightness, removing them. Also worked with clonestamp to remove so minor disturbing highlights. I did a little USM on the girl's face. And some more on the eyes. Changed a bit on the highlight of the candlelight. I decided to keep the floor there, cause I liked to have it in the image, in contrast to some other workshop editor, who removed the floor. I found that a bit too agressive, so I kept it. I've used the Despeckle filter over the white parts of floor.
Also kept the man behind her, by the way.
Hope you will see this workshop eventually, and maybe like it.

On this I used the original photo you put up as a workshop.
It was a bit difficult to get a crop out of it as I'm not used to doing this kind of photo or dealing with it.
What I tried to do, though, was give it a more square format since I found that wider format to be distracting. I also included the chin but also part of the man's left arm. Just enough I think that a line can be created up center of the arm from the bottom right corner and to the man's face, on a different angle. And the same goes with his right side, more of the collar gives more of a connection between body and head.
At least that's what I was trying to go for, a greater connection between body and head and some lines to help direct the eye of the viewer to the eyes of the subject. Because there's a lot in those eyes.
I didn't do anything in the way of sharpening or color or contrast or levels to this as I did to the actual posted image. But those settings could easily apply to this version as well.

First I changed levels, setting the upper output to 225.
Then I increased contrast 6.
After that I used the sharpen filter then the unsharp mask set to 25%
