viewed the RGB channels separately and found the red channel was most interesting. Using photoshop's channel-mixer, I converted to monochrome , enhanced the contrast a bit then saved as greyscale image.
Now, the grill is highlight of image

Here I used Hue-Saturation tool to desaturate the red, leaving only yellow to define the pathway.

I did 4 variatons altogether. For this one, I selected the RED channel, as it contained the most detail of the background, then adjusted levels to enhance the midtones.

simply cropped to get closer to the subject, then mixed the red and green channels to bring up the contrast.
result: not bad, but could be better if i spend more time on dodging and masking.

here's another attempt.
This time I made a new layer, lightened its shadows, darkened the background near the lizard's head, then used the best of both images to make one.

every improvement in one area came at a loss in another. I lightened the shadows and tinkered with the colours to bring out details but lost contrast.

(why do they call it black and white when it is really grey?)
