I think that there is a slight tilt on the right on your original picture. So I used ShiftN, a software which allows easily to rectify perspectives.

Then, with Gimp, I played with levels to get more contrast and darker lines.
I think the picture is more eyecatching with a more pronounced contrast.

Curve tool to increase the contrast in the dark area and shadow/highlight tool to try to recover some tones in the white wall in foreground.

I like Jalab's workshop, but I prefer natural look. I've only increased saturation a bit and sharpness. I think it's much better with this simple pp work! What do you think?

Brightened colours give a bit "sweeter" feeling than reality, this postprocessed version seems to be an illustration of a tourist guide brochuse. Your original version is better, because it is more realistic.

comme j'aime le sujet des escaliers et la matière de ces vielles marches je me suis permis ce WS avec un recadrage "à ma façon" (j'ai posté des escaliers en cadrage carré pour ma 100 ème sur TE)
pour arriver à avoir l'arrête du mur vertical il m'a fallut redresser 3 fois (avec Picasa) ce qui malheureusement m'a enlevé plusieures marches; mais ce petit bout restant montre encore la vie imprégnée dans ces escaliers.
j'espère que ce petit travail ne te déplaira pas.
