used two high pass filters on duplicate layers, first at 1, 2nd at 20 (then 50% fill), then adjusted highlight & shadows.

If you post at a larger file size more detail can make the photo richer as well (up to 300kb).

I thought I'd try a workshop to bring out the verticality of the rock. After cropping, I used a high pass filter at 1, then another at 20, despeckled and adjusted the highlight and shadow.

I read about the high-pass filters in the latest Macformat, create a copy of the original photo layer, run a high pass filter with setting 1, set the blend mode to overlay and despeckle if there is too much noise. Repeat it all again with a setting for the high-pass filter of 20. I then set the opacity of the first layer (setting 1) to 61% and the second (setting 20) to 33% to get an effect that wasn't too drastic.

It seems to work, an interesting technique, bringing out detail without swamping the original.

Following John's suggestions, I've used 2 high pass filters overlaid, one at 1, the other at 20, de-speckled a couple of times then decreased the lightness using hue & saturation.

Does this work or is it too much?

I have adjusted the levels, shadows & highlights, and sharpened a little to bring out the drama of the scene.

I thought the original looked underexposed, so I've tried adjusting the highlights & shadows to bring out the foreground yak and adjust the overall exposure.
