- I am an urban and environmental planner, working internationally, and definitely an amateur photographer. Although I love photography, my pictures have usually been taken “on the run” on field trips and on the way to meetings. I‘ve never had the luxury of using a tripod and waiting for good light and I can’t begin to count the pictures I have seen but had to forego capturing because of time constraints.
For years, I was a Nikon devotee. I loved the FG, replacing two of them when they were stolen, along with my lenses – an occupational hazard of working in odd places. When the zoom telephoto lens on my third FG got smashed on a field trip, the digital SLR era was well-established. Since then I have dreamed of having the spare resources to get new equipment. I have used a compact Sony, which is remarkably good, despite limited zoom capacity, but for composition I feel lost without an optical viewfinder – so the dream continues.
I became a devotee of TrekEarth in 2005, serendipitously. I first discovered the glorious body of images of France. I then began to follow the entire site and the list of TE members whose work I enjoyed and admired grew and grew. I became a diligent non-member, feeling that my own images couldn’t pass muster.
Over many years I have accumulated a lot of slides in the course of my work but frequent handling and storage often caused damage. Commercial scans or conversion to prints produced images that were fine for work but not, in my view, of good enough quality for TE.
Recently, I have begun rescanning and, where needed and possible, repairing images. Despite their lack of impeccable sharpness, I have gained some confidence that many of them have things to say that I would like to share. So, I have taken the plunge and joined TE. Over time, I plan to post groups of old images and hope to increase the proportion of new ones – perhaps even with a new digital SLR!
Thank you TE for the pleasure, information, insight, instruction, civility and fellowship you generate. I will try to be a diligent member and I look forward to learning from all of you.
Update: November 2009. After an absence from the site for a few months due to preoccupation with other pressing matters, I've realized that making the time for TE is really important. Thank you all again for what you have taught me.
