| Intro: | I subscribe to the philosophy behind TrekEarth, i.e. the objective of the site is "to learn about the world". I consider myself a traveller, rather than a tourist. This means, to me, trying to understand the underlying social and cultural variables bearing on life today, in various potential destinations. In advance of departure, I undertake considerable research, within resources, to pre-view what I am likely to see and experience. I want to feel satisfied, after the fact, that I have learned something valuable from the travel. TrekEarth offers the opportunity to check out what others have seen before me, to assist in validating my personal interest in any choice of destination. I confess, and I am sure this would be controversial, that I disagree with those who believe the primary purpose of TrekEarth is "to learn about photography" using the world as experimental subject matter. I see little value in uploading photos which show scenes (e.g. with rainbows and sunsets) with a label saying "India" or "Egypt" when, to my understanding, rainbows and sunsets may be seen anywhere. |
