I took a different and very literal approach to cropping this image. (1) I left all of the pink sand alone. (2) I measured carefully to the most precise pixel, using the Measure Tool in PS, to where the sky would occupy specifically one-third of the frame, not one pixel more and not one pixel less...and then pulled the crop trigger, "enforcing" the ""RULE"" of Thirds on this georgeous image.

This does lose some of the feeling of open space, but I was aiming to make it more oppressive, so that's not such a bad thing.
I also added a border to highlight (or perhaps lowlight) the letterbox format.

1) Selected the sky area and adjusted the contrast. The sky looks now brighter.
2) Selected the left side of the sky and seaguls, kind of 2/3 into the picture. Copied and pasted the horizontally flipped selection. After some alignment there are more seaguls on the sky.
3) Adjusted the brightness of the new layer to match the backbground. I also had to play a bit with the color balance.
4) Finally using the clone tool I got rid of the last traces of the merge.
5) I got rid of 1 or 2 seaguls in the left corner, to break the symmetry (clone tool again).
What I achieved? The right corner was a bit boring. Now the picture has a spherical symmetry, with seaguls kind of like flying out of the sunlight.
I hope you like it and I apologize if I went to far with my changes.

-used edge seeker to select background
-painted black
-selected and copied tall goose's head to clipboard
-cropped scene
-added white border
-pasted head back on above border as new layer
-trimmed head to remove traces of black
-softened edges of head to re-create a more natural fade to white
-applied unsharp mask to whole image
This was a rather bold change. I like it, but it's certainly much less natural. Could also have cloned out the dock and cropped off the top land for less distractions in a more natural style. Thanks for a great shot to play with!
