Morris Alkalay Contact
- Morris Alkalay embarked on his photography career in 1980 while working for a Marineland where he fulfilled duties as an aquarist and was being in charge of the photography department that generated press releases and annotations for displays. He was involved with marine mammals such as dolphins, sea lions, as well. Later he was promoted to be the curator of the establishment.
Actually his love and interest for photography dates back to a diving safari in 1976 at a time he did not yet have an interest in photography. There, he observed divers attending an Underwater Photo course. They were measuring distances, using underwater flashbulbs and taking notes on pads. He was thrilled by the whole magical process. Determined to purchase an underwater camera the next day, he was unaware of the many problems he would encounter. Underwater photography was difficult, especially for a person who was not a photographer. He had to study to overcome phenomena such as refraction, scattering, and even framing, much easier to achieve above water. When he "reached surface" he felt he became a better photographer, confronting new challenges and continuing to learn all the time.
One thing lead to another, he attended various courses, and assisted advertising photographers whenever possible. He then established his own business -- a Photo studio providing a variety of services such as product photography, as well as a commercial lab. that serviced other photographers and hi tech businesses.
Lately specializing in fashion and beauty photography while maintaining a variety of commercial photo services, you can still find Morris underwater, visiting his small or large aquatic friends, frequently, with his camera, as they willingly model for him in exchange for small handouts.
