I've desaturated the image (removed all colour), and then added back some red and blue for effect. I also cropped the image a bit.

Heya so I did a few things here. First off I created an adjustment layer and added a Photo Filter (Warming 81). I did this to warm up some of the shot making for less contrast later on.
Then I applied an adjustment layer of Hue Saturation. I brought the MASTER saturation down to - 100 making the image black and white. I then chose the RED channel and beefed up the lightness to +100. I dropped lightness in the YELLOW channel down to - 57. BLUE channel lightness +100.
Changing the lightness in this way allowed for individual contrast controle amongst the colours within the picture. Finally, I cropped the image to bring the focus in on the girl, I used some main lines within the image as a cut point....
Like I said before, don't know if its better or not, but its black and white.

I fixed the major black level in the shadows of the lower left bush, then I light up the whole pic empowering the light effect modifying curves.

so the first thing I did was to adjsut levels. Then adding shadow/ highlight to bring out the sunshine on the wood. Finally aplied 119% USM with .4 of a pixel. The reason for this is to bring out the deep colors in the wood glowing in the sun. Hope you like it.

I really liked the colours in KiwiRob's shot here, but I thought the foreground was a bit distracting. I cropped out a bush in the forground. To balance the shot I also brought the top down a touch, as well as the right hand side a bit. Next I thought I would move the levels to ensure the shadows are true black.
Finally I played with the Hue Saturation to tweet the detail and colour in the sky.
