Hi John, I hoped to build on what you started here. To do this I increased the contrasts seen on shore and surf with unsharp mask (low amount and low radius), then sharpened with smart sharpen (40%, .7). I did this on a separate layer so I could mask the sky. With the sky masked, I then reduced noise on the lower layer quite substantially to remove all evidence of pixelation seen here. I then beefed up your frame a small bit, to help offset the shot just a bit more. I lost a little of the definition with the save, as I have to save workshops at 200K. Still I hope you can see what I was trying to achieve. I have removed the copy from my terminal.

Hi Pierre, this was just a bit of practice for me on the restoration of this old photo. I sharpened it a bit with smart sharpen, then increased the saturation (+15). Finally I touched up some of the scratches with the spot healing brush. I hope this meets with your approval. I have removed the copy from my terminal.

Hi Murray, in the workshop I was mainly looking to reduce the blue. To do this I used levels and reset the values as follows: RGB 0 1.1 255, Red 0 150 255, Green 3 103 255, Blue 15 .75 255. I hope this meets with your approval.

Hi Steve, in this workshop I was mainly looking to neutralize the colour cast. While in there I touched up a couple of other areas as well. I started by duplicating the original layer and applying auto colour as a correction. I then increased the contrast slightly with an s-curve in curves. There was still a strong cyan cast so I added a hue/saturation layer and for cyan, changed the Hue to -30, Saturation to -10, and Lightness to +30. You'll see the biggest change here on the weeds at the bottom. I then added an overlay layer, and dodged and burned slightly with a 5% opacity white and black brush. Hi Alfred, I know, this isn't your typical workshop. I'm hoping to show you technique rather than end product. You can do that yourself.

I've used your original for the demo. For this scene the first thing I did was sharpen with USM with a low amount but high pixel count, to beef up the local contrast. I then duplicated the layer. I then selected the sky, then inversed the selection so only the ground was selected. I don't want to sharpen the sky and create noise up there. Then I sharpened with smart sharpen (60, .3). I did this a couple of times and oversharpened a bit until I got the halo. If you select the button at the bottom (with the circle in a square) that will create a layer mask for you. When you do this it will appear as white for your selected area and black for the rest. You can see in the small box the sky is black and the ground is white. That's a clue to your solution. Now take a very fine brush set at black and an opacity of about 80%, and paint along the top edge of your mountains. What this does is mask this area, with the sky, so the top layer is hidden but the bottom (unsharpened part) is exposed. That's your key. For this demo, I've turned off the bottom layer to show you what is left in the sharpening process. I hope this meets with your approval. I have removed this copy from my terminal.

Hi Mark, in this workshop I wanted to straighten the very slight tilt seen with the verticals in the smoke stacks. To do this I cropped your shot with perspective. This allowed me to stretch the top right out a small bit, and stretch the bottom left, to straighten the stacks. I then copied this back into the original, to keep your frame.
