First cropped apart of the left side in order to pull the raft on the left.

Then pulled he curves waaaaaaay up to get a higher key feel to the image.

Brushed the raft with a history brush on multiply mode to enhance some of the details brightened and partly lost by the former move.

A simple crop to Focus more on the subject. The edge of the hull acts as a good lead-in so I put it in the left corner.

This brightens up the colors and brings out the details quite a bit more, but the original conveys age quite a bit better because the colors are not as vibrant. I also cropped just a bit on the right side to center the figures.

I thought it would be interesting to focus on children and that the background, not really sharp and a bit burned by daylight, was not very necessary.

After I cropped the image, I converted it to black and white, sharpened quite a lot and edited contrast.

I hope you don't bother me working on your picture.

Dear bob, an astonishing shot. Very good story(Earth moon and sun I guess). I tried to make sky more staurated as i found it a little too dull in comparison to Great shot u have taken. Great piece of work here.

i made a version more contrasted and took out exposition on the face .+ a closer crop.

Still not sure if i prefer mine or yours...
I have sharpened the red parts of the picture using the magic wands and added a litlle of contrast to it !
Using Channel Mixer , i have un-reddish the picture as well.

I found the pieces of wood behind the knife a bit disturbing so I used QuickMask mode in Photoshop to carefully paint a mask on the knife using a 15 px 75% hardness brush to avoid too obvious edges. When the mask were ready I used Clone tool to add the background texture behind the knife.
It's a bit crude and the right thing to do would be to move the knife instead.
Edit: I must have been blind when I did this WS, there's still a large lump of wood that needs to be retouched away, I hope you get the idea anyway.
