Here, you can see the seal completely raised and the boat is able to sail out into the open river.
I was amazed at how little water escaped from the lift when it was in operation; just a few little drips. This compared massively with the large spurts of water that escape through the canal locks when they are being used.
This was very close to the main upload, just by the river flowing through the city. As far as I can tell the grey walls are the embankments of the river. The boy standing on the right was probably just about to haul a bucket of water from the river.
From a different part of Kabul. I think this was somewhere in the oldest part of the city, on the other side of the river. This is one of my relatively few photos of an Afghan woman. I always felt slightly nervous pointing my camera towards women.
