It was a difficult choice which photo to use as the official upload. True to my habits, I decided this would have to be the workshop since it doesn't have any human presence :-).

Highschool girls in Maimana in 1973. I don't know if they were walking home together just for fun, or if being a crowd made them feel safer.

From the market in Balkh. This is a rather heavily cropped photo. The strong contrasts were very unfavourable to the men who were standing immediately to the left

From a brief break during my bus-ride from Kunduz to the major northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. I was just about to get on the bus as I saw this nomadic family, probably on their way to higher grazing grounds for the summer. As far as I remember others were following with their herds of sheep and cattle, but unfortunately my bus was about to leave.

A little girl from Kunduz, 1973. Every time I show a photo of children from long ago I - and many others - ask what may have happened to them as they grew up. Did they have a good life, did they have several children of their own? etc. Another question is: Do any of these children from long ago remember me? Do they tell their own children and maybe grandchildren that "one day when I was maybe five, a stranger came to this road and took a photo of me. I wonder whatever happened to him. Is he still alive? Does he still keep my photo?".

This was very close to the main upload, just by the river flowing through the city. As far as I can tell the grey walls are the embankments of the river. The boy standing on the right was probably just about to haul a bucket of water from the river.

From a different part of Kabul. I think this was somewhere in the oldest part of the city, on the other side of the river. This is one of my relatively few photos of an Afghan woman. I always felt slightly nervous pointing my camera towards women.

From my long train journey from Karachi to Quetta. I took this picture through the window while we had stopped at a station somewhere in Baluchistan. My train probably looked exactly the same. I was going 3rd class too.

The monument to Jean Sibelius shows stylized organ pipes made of steel. It is 8,5 m high, 10,5 m wide, 6,5 m deep and weighs 24 tons. A smaller verson is found in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
