Rickshaws of Yangon

Not much to say about it. During a short stroll around some streets near the hotel, I did find these two rickshaws. However, what attracted me more was the unusually decorated pith helmet.

Pith helmets were worn by Westerners in the tropics (Africa, India and SE Asia) from late 19th to mid 20th centuries. I still remember seeing them in Angola when I was a kid.

Olá António, Angola está sempre presente na tua memória... Ainda pensei que esta fosse uma das tuas antigas scanadas, mas percebi logo que não podia ser pelas cores e qualidade de imagem. É um bom post para a categoria de transportes, simples e bem apresentado numa excelente diagonal. Vê-los a passar com pessoas na rua teria sido mais apelativo para mim, mas assim vê-se mais detalhes que são curiosos, e ainda o capacete que é de facto intrigante. Algum turísta que ofereceu ao dono do rickshaw por uma corrida qualquer...

The shape of the rickshaw atracted me, but the detail in the road distracted from the helmet so I tried a WS - not sure that it's any better, though!

Bonjour, mon bon ami Antonio,
Ces deux side-cars (cycles) cadrés d'une façon serrée augmentent la force du sujet. De plus, le casque de type colonial est une marque intéressante du temps passé.
Je remarque que chaque véhicule possède une plaque d'immatriculation !

Que bicicletas tão originais, para mim é sempre interessante ver o que se usa do outro lado do «mundo» já que nunca tive oportunidade de lá ir. Por isso a foto é muito interessante.

belle photo de ces pousses pousses avec le pousseur sur le coté.
Vue que je n' avais pas encore vue et je trouve cela très bien fait et pratique pour emmener les touristes.

The diagonal axis adds good dynamism. Excellent sharpness & graphism, with a good downward pov. The pith helmut looks like a colonial relic, & makes a fine focal point & centre of attention. Tfs!

Hello Antonio,
It's the first time ever I see a rickshaw where the passenger is sitting next to the driver. So far I've only seen rickshaws where the seat for the passengers was in front (common in Indonesia) or at the back (in many other countries). However this way contact with the driver is easier.
Good composition with the diagonal lines.

Hi, Antonio -

Yes, the pith helmet is what makes this picture; it adds whole levels of social commentary! You might try playing with Curves or Levels and work on the quality a bit in post processing. I did a small WS to give you an idea.

Um sujeito interessante bem enquadrado e captado. E pena o dono do helmet nao estar no rick shaw pois em geral eles sao pessoas interessantes de se fotografar.

Hello Antonio,

Thank you for your photo. I had a soft spot for the rickshaw drivers in Myanmar during a recent stay. It seemed that many were struggling to find work as more and more cheap motorbikes were being imported aacross the border from China. Also, with tourist numbers down after the cyclone and massacres in Oct 07. The drivers were very concerned as they had no other means of income. It would be a shame for this type of transport to become extinct. Thank you for sharing.

Hello Antonio,

I love the image of the Rickshaw, and in learning from your excellent note about pith helmets, let me return the favor. The British, in their days as the colonial masters in India, would of course sail in steamships. To avoid the very hot sun on the southern side, they would book cabins on the north side of the ship (left in the trip over — or portside), and on the north side, right on the return trip to England — or starboard). The easy way for them to remember was "Port side over, starboard side back." That expression gave rise to the word "posh," meaning elegant and comfortable.

esse meio de transporte deve ser bem comum por lá. Interessante ficou esse seu ponto de tomada de cima prá baixo, valorizando bem as bicicletas e não deixando espaço para distrações. Um belo registro!

such a well composed subjects. Honestly I would say I would overlook this moment.
nice texture and soft and cloudy feeling, maybe the trishaw puller do have the same feeling as there were no customer yet?

Rickshows sempre são uma atracção ao fotógrafo. Sempre que os vejo me lembro de outras formas de fazer face à vida. Ainda por cima li um livro de uma história passada na Índia. Gostava de ver pessoas. Em todo o caso quando fôr oportuno fotografe esses momentos. ( Tive uma amizade Macaense e aí também são muito exóticos ). Cumprimentos. Domingos

Ótima imagem, muito interessante ver este veículo e o capacete extemporâneos, que parecem brotar do asfalto, como que por encanto. Muito boa idéia e bem realizada.
Estou sempre a aprender alguma coisa aqui no TE... não conhecia a palavra "jinriquixá", mencionada pela Maria, nem "riquexó" (esta eu achei no dicionário). Por essas e por outras é que gosto do TE.

Subject is very nice and we have a different style here and i know you have visited Madura Island so you can imagine it. Rickshaw or Becak always an atractive subject for photographer and you have a well composition here, just find some noisy maybe because of the ISO but its really doesn't bother me to enjoy your picture. I like the topic, but am a bit surpised by the rather faded colors and lack of contrast, so that at first I thought this was an old picture, wihch is obviously not the case. Any reason?

Bonita composição com estas duas bicicletas com carro lateral bem interessante acho que nunca tinha visto igual , na China e em Macau tinha mas a bicicleta era a frente , gostei das linhas em diagonal , o detalhes do chapéu ficou interessante , parabéns !!

I like the simplicity of the composition, the cub and the traffic line provide strong diagonals that contrast well with the curves of the rickshaw and the hat. This is pretty much the style of rickshaw we have here in San Diego, but MUCH bigger passenger compartments - to accommodate super-sized passengers. I don't know how theose fellow do it, even though downtown San Diego is fairly flat.

parece que há algum ruído na imagem, talvez seja apenas a textura do chão.. interessante este tipo de bicicleta, no peru andei em uma bicicleta taxi (taxi cholo) mas a gente ia na parte da frente com a bagagem enquanto o "escravo de aluguel" ia atrás, pedalando. Achei bem interessante o detalhe do capacete colonial, lembra aquelas cenas de filmes antigos

Despite I am a bicycles fan, I would say this may be on of the solution for less pollution in our cities. I also like the cheap sun (and rain ?) protection !
