Photographer’s Note
This ancient volcano is named Burnt Rock as it is indeed, red and black from its past life.
When one is driving to the Painted Hills from off of Hwy. 26 instead of turning into the Painted Hills Unit continue driving past the turn for approx. 10 miles and you will enter into another beautiful area of the Miocene. Burnt Rock is also the name of the ranch that sets beneath the rock and in history, as I was told, during the Native American uprising in the 1800's the Natives clinbed up onto the rock and shot flaming arrows down onto the ranch and burnt it down.
The drive is on a dirt road that is well kept and has many beautiful fields, one especially that is kept for migratory birds as there are Sunflowers growing for as far as one can see.
A drive well worth the time during mid afternoon when the light is not the best for the Painted Hills...

Hello Steven
Strange volcano and nice colors. I like the way you framed this picture with the river like a guide to the volcano
Cheers

Nice shot.. nice area... I like the composition and framing here.
Reminds me of Smith Rocks which is probably an old volcanic plug itself.
