Photographer’s Note
Kokerboom Forest.
from www.namibia-travel.net:
About 13 kilometres north-east of Keetmanshoop lies the spectacular and much photographed Kokerboom or quiver tree forest on the farm Gariganus. The site has been declared a National Monument.
The quiver tree or "Kokerboom" is indigenous to the hot and dry southern part of Namibia. The plants are succulents and can reach a height of up to 9 metres in height. They have adapted to the extreme environmental conditions by storing water in their trunks. The tree only blossoms for the first time after 20 to 30 years and can reach 300 years of age. The wood is very light and spongy inside. And because the trunk and branches can be easily hollowed out, they were used as quivers by the bushmen (San people) who formerly inhabited this area.

Hi Achim,
Great to see new picture from Namibia. Those are very special looking spiky trees. They clearly accommodate to desert conditions well. Uphill angle is nice and low angle shows rocky landscape well.

Hallo Achim!
Bizarrer geht's kaum. Eine wunderschöne Aufnahme oder jede schreiende Farbe - fast nur aus blau und braun komponiert. Faszinierend! Ein im wahrsten Sinne exotisches Bild...

hello Achim,
the title attracted my attention, for some reason "Kokerboom" to me sounded as something from Australia or New Zealand :)
surreal looking photo, the trees seem very dry and very light, almost weightless. light seems to be quite harsh, but the sharp shadows fit well this image, very nice work.

Kristine

hi Achim
It is quite amazing for me to see so many different kind of trees in the desert zone such as this one with its unique style of branches, especially the direction of branches and the reducing size of the trunk.
Very lovely landscape set against the perfect blue sky. Good capture. It must be very hot.

Hi, Achim. Very strange trees that look a little like living fossils. You've framed your picture very well with the two trees in the foreground creating a sort of window on their brothers. The blue sky and the rocks reinforce the idea of drought. Nice to be able to discover this area with your pcitures.
Have a nice evening,
Philippe

Achim Hello,
Your photo and the info has the documentary taste which I really like... I did not know anything about Kokerboom trees and forest. You said in your note that the trees could reach 9 m. How tall were these trees?

Bonjour Achim,
merveilleux endroit, je n'avais jamais vu ces arbres auparavant. Ils créent une touche d'irréel dans ce paysage 100% nature.
Une photo un peu sombre qui accentue un sentiment de mystère.
C'est superbe.
