The tight cluster of domed churches of the Pecherska is delightful to the eye. On this face of the structure the plastered walls give way to the raw brick underneath where sections are shown in their earlier unfinished state.

If the top of the church building were there, then the entire structure would be of interest. However, this composition is about the details--the windows and the exposed first layer. So, I agree with the artist's choice of chopping off the top of the building so the viewer is forced to look at the chosen focal area.
