Photographer’s Note

11th November 1975 – Independence of Angola

Today, a couple pictures to commemorate the Angola National Day. Soon after the independence, a wave of revolutionary street artists swept the Angolan capital and left many mural paintings all over the place. I was in Angola at the time and went around the city to capture on slides many of the murals. Quite recently, I found a box of slides that I thought had been lost many years ago and I picked the one which I think is very appropriate for today’s posting. I hope you like it. In WS is a general view of the mural painting for context.

Some numbers since the Republic of Angola became independent 33 years ago.

Independence Day: 11th November 1975
Years of Liberation War: 14 (1961-1975)
Years of Civil War: 27 (1975-2002)
President: José Eduardo dos Santos, since Sept 1979 and NEVER been elected!

Population: 12.5 million people. Luanda, the country’s capital city: app. 4 million.
Adult literacy rate: 67%
Life expectancy (at birth): total population: 37.92 years / male: 36.99 years / female: 38.9 years (2008 est.)
Infant mortality (under one): 154 per 1,000 live births
Under five mortality: 260 per 1,000 live births

Pour moi le 11 Novembre c'est l'armistice de la guerre Franco Allemande. J'ignorais que cette date était aussi la date de l'indépendance angolaise. Par ta note on comprend mieux que la démocratie en Afrique a encore un long chemin a parcourir.

hehe, gosto muito desta, António. Fez-me rir e só isso já seria suficiente para mim, mas é também uma boa foto de um belo mural. Aqui está um excelente exemplo do que falámos sobre arte de rua - apoio totalmente a animação de velhas fachadas com este tipo de intervenções. Engraçado ser coincidente com o dia de S. Martinho - agora já não esqueço. Também gostei muito do WS, incluindo a vista parcial do carro que seria agora uma peça de museu.

Thanks for the very informative note about Angola.
In general I like mural paintings very much. I like to discover the messages that these paintings give in an unofficial way. But I also like the art of comic strips as many people in my country do.
Looking at this colourful painting I wonder how African it really is. You write that revolutionary street artists did a lot of mural painting in Luanda. So I suppose these artists were Angolese people. I may be wrong of course but this painting looks very much like comic strips made in Europe during the colonial period. I imagined African art and paintings much different. But again, I'm probably wrong.

this is a colourful street painting...a bit humoristic as well...but...but...we all know what happened to Angola after that kick!
the president had never been elected, cuban and soviet came....a civil war started...sowing landmines almost everywhere.
I hope they will recover....some tourism is starting there....but so far it seems they should have not kicked portuguese out (maybe I am wrong too...and I know it is not so fine to think that way....)

que bom que vc encontrou estes slides antigos, isso é um tesouro..Achei bem interessante este mujral, mostra bem o ambiente hostil da época, imagino que hoje em dia este tipo de mensagem agressiva contra os lusos já não seja tão forte. Triste saber que depois de tantas guerras a riqueza desta nação ainda esteja tão mal distribuída, poderiam bem trocar o porcentual de dinheiro destinado à defesa para a educação. Enfim, esperamos mais amostras do seu baú de slides, aquele que julgavas perdido.. Fazia parte dos 99 porcento de que falas na sua página de entrada ?

We've learned about it in the schools...

hmm, I find this picture very valuable, not only because is retrospective window to the past, but also like a reflection of the street art and political moods in this epoch. I had a friend (bulgarian) who lived with his family in Angola during the civil war and he lost his arm during a scope of fire of russian soldiers. The theme Angola is very sensitive for me. Thanks for sharing.

apesar de compreensível e interessante o trabalho, achei ele um bocado agressivo, apesar de não ser nada comparado ao que os colonizadores fizeram com a África, mas mesmo após a independência, parece que pouca coisa mudou em Ângola, pelo visto é como aqui no Brasil, apesar de não termos essa xenofobia aos portugueses, pelo contrário, aqui continua a mesma classe burguesa dominante sugando o pouco que resta da população, acho que só mudam os nomes mesmo, monarquia, burgesia, políticos...
Quanto a foto gostei das cores e qualidade, deu pra capturar ótimos detalhes.

São vários os pontos merecedores de nota (e de pontos):

1 - boa qualidade de imagem, mesmo sendo um scan (e "tão antigo"...)

2 - A fotografia, retrata um momento muito importante para uma nação "irmã", com humor!

3 - A nota é muito informativa!

4 - Slides foram recuprados "a tempo" de postar esta foto no dia 11.

Por outro lado, genericamente, gosto de apreciar arte de rua, como murais.

Muito oportuno, ir buscar uma foto da época e de época para assinalar a independência desse grande país que tão infeliz tem sido devido sabe-se lá ao quê, (mas certamente que os governantes têm grandes culpas no cartório). Apesar do carácter panfletário, muito ao gosto marxista-leninista-maoísta da pintura, não posso deixar de sorrir.
Parece-me admiravelmente bem digitalizada e suponho que o original deve estar em óptimas condições apesar dos 32 respeitáveis anos de idade.

What a find to unearth those long-lost slides!! Your composition is sharp and the colors amazing. Good to include the context in the WS. The statistics certainly don't speak well for 'independence.' What a sad disappointment for those who fought for independence and are apparently still fighting now.

I had a student from Eritrea who fought for indpendence from Ethiopia and encouraged others to fight. He said the new government was worse than the old government. He could fight no more, so he left; but he still felt responsible for the SAA, Pat

Gosto mais do WS, com este detalhe metido no conjunto. É curioso que Lenine está atrás (à direita) dos angolanos observando (aprovando, comandando?) a cena.
Suponho que hoje em dia já não fariam murais assim tão ridículos.
Tenho curiosidade em saber se estes murais ainda existem.
Bom documento histórico.
Quanto à nota, os números não deixam dúvida.

E foi assim que fomos corridos de Angola. Tanta dedicação e desilusão. Na situação actual as dificuldades parece que são muito mais. Afinal Portugal era enorme e fomos largando tudo inclusivé o Brazil. Agora que Portugal está mais reduzido ainda não garante estabilidade social aos que são do continente. Cumprimentos. Domingos

Hello Sr.António, I liked the way how Angolan street artists reflected their feelings on the walls after the colonial period. You could have crop uper-left part, just to remove the darker part from the photo. The overall graffiti at the WS is more beautiful.

Muito interessante esta pintura de parede o negro a expulsar o branco de Angola , eu acho que podia ter sido diferente e todos podiam viver juntos em paz e com progresso mas a politica dos governantes foi muito má e também a aos 500 anos de colónia governada por governos de fora .

Bem curioso e divertido este mural que seria muito apropriado não fossem os que por lá ficaram ainda piores do que o povo que os colonizou durante tanto tempo.
Basta atentar nos numeros que nos trazes e verificar que após tantos anos e apesar dos inumeros e valiosos recursos naturais do país asa mais básicas necessidades da população ainda não foram supridas.
Outro 'pormenor' não intangivel ´para quem não conhece a realidade do país, e porque não de Africa será o porquê desta guerra civil que dizimou o país durante 27 longos e penosos anos, deixando-o no estado miseravel em que se encontra, sim porque Luanda até pode estar em franco crescimento mas e o resto do imenso país? não contará para as estatisticas?
Curioso que os antigos colonizadores sejam novamente aqueles que tentam recompor o país ainda que muitos mais 'abutres' se tentem envolver na sua reconstrução... até a China...

Hi Antonio:

One of my favorite things about living in Chile was seeing the political murals and messages all over the walls of Santiago, particularly in the poor areas. Given that most of the people in those areas had no other way to really express their frustration with the system, you could really see a bit into their mindset. I like this shot, and your note on Angola is very interesting as well. So much to be done in Africa.

Maybe the day will come , when the people of Angola can enjoy a safer , healthier and better life as they deserve after so many years of instability .
By contrast , Angola is now a model for change for many African countries ,but as your relevant datas indicates , there is a long way to go. you have all it takes to make the change.
