Hello folks.

This photo is from the city of Tivoli and the Villa d’Este. Tivoli is an ancient Italian town, about 30 km from Rome, at the falls of the Aniene river. The town can be dated back as far as 13th century BC. Today it has got a population of 66,000 inhabitants.

The Villa d'Este (built between 1550 and 1572) is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and is a masterpiece of Italian architecture and especially garden design.

As I wrote in an earlier post, we had a short, guided, trip from Rome visiting this beautiful garden. As I could understand from our guide the area had about 600 fountains and they were supplied with water from the river Aniene. Once the water had passed through one fountain it came to a lower level and there were some other fountains. To a lower level again and so on. When it came to the last fountain it passed out to the river again and later joined the river of Tiber. No circulation, always fresh water! All this with no support by water pumps!
This must be a masterpiece in Italian engineering 450 years ago!

This fountain is called ‘le cento fontane’ and means ‘the hundred fountains’.

In the WS1 you can see som tiles on a wall just by the entrance to the Villa d'Este.
In WS2 there is a view over the Neptune fountain.
