Photographer’s Note

The Monument to the Girondins and the French Republic was erected in the late 1880's to celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution. Designed by the architect Victor Rich and the Bordeaux sculptor Achille Dumilâtre, it is dedicated to the memory of the Girondin (Bordeaux area) deputies, who were victims of the Reign of Terror. This is a partial view of the fountain on the south of the monument with allegoric statues of the Republic (the woman) the labour (the man) and the education (the three children).

The column, which stands at 43 metres high, is surmounted by a statue representing 'Freedom' breaking free from her chains. On either side of the base there are two vast monumental fountains with various allegorical figures.
