Photographer’s Note

A roofing detail from the "Lapptown" church village in Arvidsjaur.

A "church village" is a gathering of very small houses where people stayed over when they visited the church. It seems peculiar today but this villages were built in a time when the law said that you had to go to church on a regular basis. The church villages was a solution in the far north where the travel distances between the remote settlements and the few churches were too long for a return trip on the same day.
