Photographer’s Note
According to the legend, Our Lady appeared here and the site became a place of pilgrimage that was visited a lot during the Middle Ages. The "Chapel of Memory" is built in the place where the Virgin appeared. Inside there are blue and white azulejos which tell the story of the Sanctuary.
The monument was built in 1715 on a 135m high cliff and it is known under the name of "Nossa Senhora's sanctuary do Cabo" or "Santuário da Pedra Mua". In the church there are altar pieces and paintings from the 18th century as well as the small statue of Our Lady do Cabo.
Today, this sanctuary is practically in ruins.

Bravo, Robi!!!
the sky could not be more dramatic. somehow what you depict here represents the intense passion (pathos) of the Roman Catholic Church.
Once again, excellent work!

You have done some thing that I never did which is being there at sunset!
It is a wonderful place in Serra da Arrábida and it is pity that the council let it go down. They were renovating the church some 6/7 years ago but I do not know the status of the work.
Your picture is very nice and the silhouette against the red sky adds to the mysticism of the sanctuary.

Hello Robi! What a sky with the dark clouds overhead and the little bit of red the shines through the bows. I love your approach to have the church in the middle and how you lead us down. I find it really special that we can hardly see the buildings but just enough to make it clear where we are and that you have the red sky almost burning above. Excellent ... what a treat on this Sunday night! Best regards ... Barbara.

Hi Robert. Wonderful sunset you got here. I had already seen this a work but only saw black and red and no details on the archs or in the church (there's something wrong with it for sure). Here, at home, that's an almost completly different picture. Maybe one of these days I'll post my photo of that church taken the same day that the one of the lighthouse. Regards. Paulo

This is something else!
Gorgeous, gorgeous and gorgeous colours.
Striking sky over such a geometrical 'vanishing' composition.
Eye-catching image without a shadow of a doubt.

Maria

Ciao Robert,
among all of your beautiful photos of your gallery, I have chosen this because it has inside a halo of mystery and dramatic power. You have done a fantastic work, where the silhouette of the sanctuary opposes well with the red of the background giving an almost infernal feeling. Compliments!
Ciao

Very, very impressive sunset picture from this place, Robi. A place I know very well, because I used to sell treks from here to Sesimbra along the coast line, visiting deserted beaches. Good thing, they removed all cars from here. The tones on the sky are incredible and the silhouette of the church on the brightest part is perfect. Besides the fine central perspective I also like the detail of window effect on the arches on both sides of the church, as if it was 2 eyes...
cheers,
ric
