Photographer’s Note
Saturday October 11 early in the morning I was to Ghent, a little bit morning fog, you can see to the picture around the tower, therefor also a white sky.
This is it castle Claeys Bouuaert Beekstraat, with avery lovely garden and forest.
I hope that you like it.
History of Mariakerke
In the 17th century, Mariakerke was divided in two because of the construction of the "Brugse Vaart", a canal that connects the cities of Ghent and Bruges. Because of the hundreds of years of separation, both halves developed their own unique atmosphere.
Mariakerke obtained the status of independent village in 1793, after which a bridge was constructed to connect both halves of the village. The bridge has been destroyed several times during war, which makes that the actual bridge was put up in 1964.
Besides the bridge, Mariakerke only had one main road which connected the village with the city of Ghent. This road was very important for the village, and still exists today under the name "Brugse Steenweg".
Later in the 18th century, a trade route was constructed from Ghent to Eeklo, and Mariakerke became a stop along this important road. Nowadays the road is better known as the N9, one of Ghent's most busy avenues. This new street had a significant impact on the 18th century Mariakerke.
The people from Mariakerke became more involved in the city life of Ghent once the industrial era had begun. A lot of villagers found a job at the many factories of Ghent, and a lot of rich industrials constructed castles and mansions in the rural Mariakerke. These castles can still be visited today, and add a special atmosphere to the village.
Mariakerke finally lost its rural character after World War II. A lot of city people moved to the country side, and Mariakerke witnessed a real population boom. In the 1970's, the city of Ghent started expanding again, slowly but surely absorbing the village of Mariakerke into its urban borders. 1976 saw the fusion of Mariakerke with Ghent, and ever since it has been part of the urban area of Ghent.

Goeiemorgen John,

As usual you have a beautiful subject and great eyes to compose picture and this shot still the good one but i see you have a little bit problem with the harsh light against you especially on the building part and the pale sky, sometime the weather are not always behind us but I love the autumn colours you brought here and for the very informative note. Thanks John :-)

Goed morgen John,
Bravo.

Dag John,
the strong backlight is a bit unusual but the light balance with the good reflection of the pond very interesting in the effect. Somehow I do have the impression the the real castle stands there still in distance but the reflection is coming towards me. Good warm autumn colours.

Hallo John,

Hello John,
A pleasing composition well balanced between castle and trees. I like the view across the lake with the reflection and scattered leaves. There is a slight are of over-exposure around the top left of the castle but this does nothing to spoil the overall enjoyment of the image.

Dag John,

John,
Your composition is great using the reflection to create nice depth and balance. The placement of the castle works great using the trees to provide balance. The angle of the shot gives the caste a nice sense of depth. The colors are fine as is the sharpness and DOF. Its too bad that you have some overexposure in the upper left but it does not ruin this fine shot.

Hello John,

Good Morning John,
The reflections in the water of the canal are assets to the composition. The point of takes our eyes toward the castle. The trees with the fall colors are framing well the building. The details and colors are clear and sharp. The cloudy sky is filtering the light which brings out the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi John,
Wow, another excellent shot from you, wonderful colours, reflections and details, stunning location!
The only thing I don't like is the overexposed sky which was beautifully blue as I can see in its darker reflection, I can imagine the contrast was great there and it is very difficult to avoid it in such light condition, I usually find circular polarizer filter useuful because it is darkening the sky a bit, ND grad would help for sure, maybe 2 exposures blended together. Apart from this it is wonderful and I wouldn't change anything,
TFS & regards!

Beautiful reflection and wonderful fall colours in this. The white sky is the only thing that isn't perfect here, but the soft light that it gives you is great for showing the leaves on the trees. I like the inclusion of that small piece of grass on the lower left, which gives this a good sense of depth and 3 dimensions. Nice work!

Hi John,
quite different from your usual well saturated palace/castles in the parks. The lighting was very unlucky, but nevertheless the result is noticeable thanks to the reflection.

PS It would have been better to get a flare in the right bottom angle to underline the hard frontal lighting...

Hi, John.
