Plaka,the capital

Plaka,is the capital of the island.It began to develop dramatically after the destruction of Ancient Hora when Castro was no longer able to accommodate the increasing numbers of refugees within its walls.

The village, so called because of the flat land on which it was built, is notable for its island architecture, mild climate and wonderful views of the Gulf of Milos.Walking along the narrow back streets between neat white-washed courtyards and balconies festooned with flowers, we are filled with feelings of familiarity and warmth.

In this traditional village, are most of the civil service offices and the folk and archaeological museums - custodians of cultural heritage from the distant to the more recent past. Also, the churches which, by their very existence, remind us of the history of this volcanic hill from the time of its first settlement until today.

H Πλάκα είναι η πρωτεύουσα του νησιού. Άρχισε να αναπτύσσεται έντονα μετά την καταστροφή και εγκατάλειψη της Παλαιάς Xώρας, και όταν πλέον δε χωρούσαν άλλοι κάτοικοι στο εσωτερικό του Kάστρου. H γνήσια νησιώτικη λαϊκή αρχιτεκτονική, το πολύ καλό κλίμα και η ωραιότατη θέα προς τον κόλπο της Mήλου, είναι μερικά από τα στοιχεία που τη χαρακτηρίζουν. Περπατώντας στα στενά πλακόστρωτα σοκάκια, ανάμεσα σε μικρές ασβεστωμένες αυλές και λουλουδιασμένα μπαλκόνια, όλα νοικοκυρεμένα, μας δημιουργείται μία αίσθηση οικειότητας και ζεστασιάς.

Στον παραδοσιακό αυτό οικισμό θα συναντήσουμε τις περισσότερες δημόσιες υπηρεσίες καθώς και τα μουσεία, αρχαιολογικό και λαογραφικό, που φυλάσσουν την πολιτιστική μας κληρονομιά από το μακρινό παρελθόν μέχρι και το πιο πρόσφατο. Aκόμα τις εκκλησίες της, που με την παρουσία τους, μας τονίζουν όλη την ιστορία του ηφαιστειακού αυτού λόφου από την εποχή που κατοικήθηκε μέχρι σήμερα.

Πολύ πρωτότυπη ματιά νησιώτικου δειλινού!Μ'αρέσει που σε πρώτο πλάνο έχεις βάλει τα κτίσματα και στο βάθος τον ορίζοντα!
Όμορφα χρώματα,λίγο sharpnes παραπάνω το ήθελε.

Hello Danos,

An original (and very nice) framing for a sunset. I like the color who the light gives to the wall of the church and of the house. The peoples gives an intersting element of life and an idea of the scale of the place.

It's a charming sunset capture. Excellent pov. Good explanation note. It's easy for me to understand the connection between the English "flat land" and "village" because of the Greek "xwpa":-). Keep on showing more from Milos Island (it's too far for me to visit)!

that's really great!
It's an image so poetic and charming. Everything is where it should be in this perfect composition. The colour and the light are simply marvellous. It really comunicates the silent evening atmosphere in a Aegean Island. It's an image not only with a fine depth of field but above all with depth of feeling!

Hi Danos,
Beautiful view and light, amazing POV/compo, simple but very effective. All those lines of the houses and the wall force our look to travel from the FG to the horizon, where the sun just set down. Somehow the little human silhuettes acentuate a certain nostalgic mood.

Kalimera Dano, I love this poetic capture of Milos - the soft warm tones are beautiful and the elementary graphical language is hghly enjoyable too. It's great and enticing - it would be lovely to walk up that street there and watch the setting sun!

The soft ambiance here is very inviting.
The pink tones add a very soothing effect.
Beautiful composition, as it takes the viewer
to walk this path all the way to the bacony
to observe the sea from this church.
The atmosphere is calmed and relaxing.

The lovely traditional island white washed homes take on a very tranquil pink hue as they are exposed to the setting sun.
This image has a very peaceful dreamy quality to it.

you had waited until these magical colours arrived - and it was worth of them! Your composition that enables us to see the bay and remote parts of the islands from a safe and intime part of the town (as a kind of a human made shelter which can protect us from the forces of nature) is well enhanced by the unusual warm colours. I like this view. The outlook reflects diverse and distinguished elements: the composition of the facade of the chapel, with its tower and its doors in arches, the floor in various shapes, and the depth of the scene, which leads us to appreciate a great evening. Additional to this, people get a dynamic touch to the shot.

This is the pink hour! Very romantic color for a nice sunset! Well controlled exposure with good details in this low light. I like the perspective from this well chosen POV.. it has a lot of depth... Verticals are well perpendicular to the floor... no distortion there.
