Photographer’s Note

...."3977"....

"When the Challenger Engine #3977 was delivered to
the Union Pacific" Railroad in June 1943, it was one of
105 such engines built by the American Locomotive
Company on New York. There are two remaining "3900"
class locomotives, and the only one in the world on
public display is the center of the Union Pacific
Rail Museum in North Platte, Nebraska, USA.
These Engines were designed for both freight and
passenger service and for speeds up to 80 mph.
The first source of energy used was coal, but in 1945
the engine was converted to an oil burner and the number
was changed to 3710. The total weight of the engine fully
loaded is 1,069,800 lbs. The tender is 47 ft. 3/8 in. long
and will hold 28 tons of coal or 5,945 gallons of oil, and
25,000 gallons of water. The engine is actually two
locomotives under one boiler.

The Challenger was the largest engine on the rails for
a time. Her first assignment was hauling freight between
Los Angeles and Salt Lake City and from Los Angeles
to Caliente, California. After diesels took over, she was
assigned to the Wyoming Division and then to the
Nebraska Division until her retirement in November 1961.
The original number 3977 was restored at that time.

The Union Pacific Railroad donated and installed
Engine #3977 in the Railroad Museum October 19, 1968."

A real heavy duty engine, built for speed and heavy loads...
Good point of view and impressive details, and I'm happy to see this old lady is well taken care of after her retirement!

Larry, nice presentation. I like trains, there is part of me that still longs for the days when my basement had a model RR set up. The photo is sharp and nicely lit if a bit ordinary, which is not bad at all. I personally would like to see the pov from the platform looking forward alongside the engine or maybe from inside out the window. Since I wasn't there I have no idea if either is possible. Overall fine presentation.

Hello Larry, I see that you're getting more and more pictures! that's good ;) nice railroad vehicle. If I can only add that in my opinion it's better to take such pix from the front. to show everything from the start and end up with 3977 number. that's my point of view ;)

This is a nice shot of this impressive locomotive. The angle of the shot works well giving the photo a nice sense of depth and direction. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail.

A very well documented image with good and educational information to go with it. Like a show and tell session.
This is a very good quality image, good sharpness and clarity, the light is fairly strong but you got good details without over exposed the bright area. The shadowy part is nicely visible and good contrast. Good work and thanks for the effort.

I am a big fan of trains and engines.
This one is built for heavy loads --80 or more cars seen in the distance as we drive along the roads.

I can imagine even in those days, travel by train would be a great experience. Because of the heavy weight, slower speed and conservative tracks, train travel is safer?

I like this shot of locomotive showing the mechanism of wheels, levers, engines, machines.

All cowboy western movies show train rides!

Hey, Larry, this is a cool shot. I have a friend who travels all over the world (or did) photographing WORKING steam trains. He's running out of material now, though. This is a beauty.
