Photographer’s Note
The gondole now used in Venice consists of 280 pieces of wood (oak larch, walnut tree, cherry tree, lime, cedar and plywood) 8 gasolines different of wood enter its manufacture, and of two metal parts located in prow and poop. The boat is 10,80 meters long and 1,38 meters broad for a weight of 600 kilogrammes. More half of the gondole is out of the water with a normal load. Low and light to be handy, it is propelled by only one oarsman who is held upright with the left back while rowing right-sided, from where the asymmetry of the gondole, modification introduced at the XIXe century. Asymmetry: 24cm with port side. The transverse axis is thus shifted towards the line to take account of the weight of the gondolier while the left side is more curved in order to keep a right trajectory. The single oar consists of wood indonésien and measures 4,20 meters. Punt, it is not fixed, which makes it possible to release it quickly, and rests simply on the forcola, piece of wood generally consisted of drowning, crossed in only one piece of wood and cut according to measurements of the gondolier. The morsi (bit), these eight round notches, are used to row. Each one is used for a precise operation (front walk, step back, short turn, rotation on the spot). Undermined (“horse”), ornament with semi-length of the gondole on the level of the balustrades, represents allegorical figures like hippocampi or a siren. The fero of prova (Venetian term to indicate the figurehead of the gondole) in the beginning was used to counterbalance the weight of the gondolier. During the XVIIe century, it acquired a precise symbolic system. The six parallel horizontal bars symbolize the six sestieri (“districts”) of Venice and the bar located behind the island of Giudecca. The curve symbolizes as for it the Large Channel. Lastly, the empty space formed by the meeting of the higher figure and the first bar represents the Bridge of Rialto. It is always white. The squeri build the gondoles while the remeri manufacture the oars and carve the forcola. It takes currently approximately a month to manufacture a gondole, whose standard model costs 20.000 euros. Use Today, the gondole is used more only by the tourists. 400 gondoliers have a navigation permit whereas one estimated at 10.000 the number of gondoles in XVIe century.

bonjour pascal;
excellent

Hi Pascal,
simply beautiful this picture thanks to the great perspective and the impressive light management. The colours is a great bonus poins, so vivid bright and well saturated they make the compo even more beautiful to look at. Excellent use of the wide angle to create an original shot from one of the most beautiful city in the world. Thanks very much for sharing it.

Igor

too good to be true...the gondola...the water...the colors...and the sharpness....very unreal...looks more like a model not a picture...but i guess that's what a canon eos 5d does!!!;)
great clarity all around...brilliant shot

Hi Pascal,
Different POV from Venice, quite low POV, almost at water level...
Gondoles look like flying in a green medium, amazing clarity of colors.
I like the combination of wide angle and close-up to gondole.

Burcu

Bonsoir Pascal,

Hi Pascal, the POV you choose make the gondels 'hang' in the air and create a very good and unusual perspective. LOve also the contrast of the green water with the red of the buildings. Excelent work,
Best regards

Bonsoir Pascal,

Poster quality.

What vivid colours and great composition. Like the way it looks like the gondolas are almost floating above the water, not even touching the surface.

Bonjour Pascal. A photograph that makes one look and look and appreciate its many wonderful aspects: the incredible light, clarity, colours, the exceptional depth to the image, the elegant vertical composition and the dream like presence of the gondolas which seem to defy the laws of physics - as they seem to be floating above the incredibly green water. Pure magic. Incroyable cette realisation. Amicalement. Klaudio.

Hello Pascal!
That's a very beautiful and interesting picture of Venice!
All its icons are there in a very nice composition! The vertical format was very adequate and gave a "majesty" tone to the elements in the image!
Excellent quality photograph!
TFS - Congratulations!

Hi Pascal,
it is hard to make a fresh photo from Venice but you did it. I love the low point of view with focus on gondolas but at the same time excellently chosen exposure to lead the eye from those gondolas to their natural environment: canal and colourful, vivid, full of details Venice architecture. Absolutely brilliant image with fantastic light and colours!
Kind regards,
Jeri

Bonjour Pascal,
No words, apart from the impressive colors of it, what attracts most my attention is the way the gondolas seem to be floating over the water without even touching it!

amicalement

Very good shot. Colors and light are excellent but most of all I appreciate the composition with the two gondole that seems that are flying in the air instead that on the canale water. Really a beautiful shot. TFS, Andrea
