Photographer’s Note
Sitting at the end of a carriage in the metro in Istanbul, I was joined at the next station by Melek (meaning Angel) and her friend : we joked together and they agreed to be taken in photo, not too much posing but not a great photo, taken in movement.
Light conditions were not ideal and there were people behind me... Only after did I discover that a man in the other carriage was watching, in a contrasting mood but kept at bay.
(NB : leaving for east France, just for a few days).

While I've never been to Turkey, I'm assuming that this picture says so much about modern Turkey. You have these delightful young woman who travel next to traditional old men, who look sceptically on them. The guy in back really makes this shot come alive. Thank you for posting this one because it is a great statement, even if the girls' faces are a bit grainy. Well done!

Salut Cath,

There you go, Cath... Much less controversial. But wait, do I see a man with a religious cap in the back? Oh well, the times, they are a changing. Don't worry, be happy! All the best,

It's interesting how their clothes and hair are so alike, almost like a uniform--I guess in every segment of society, one must conform...even among nonconformists.
They seem very casual and friendly, which makes this a really pleasant scene. The man watching from the other car makes an interesting accent.
At least in Istanbul, I'm sure this is much more typical than the veiled women of your earlier photo.
Regards, Ken.

Salut, Catherine.

Yeah, a very contrasty society that we are living in. Sharp edges of the knife.
My only hope for the future, is the warm blood that we carry in our veins. Those heartful of smiles may protect us from a bitter end. Who knows...
And LOL for the old man at the BG...

Hello Catherine,
What a great catch (even when you only discovered later)! And considering the circumstances, technically more than adequate. Well, I love this post. The man 'looking in' is just great.

Hello Catherine,
So, really great contrasts there while adding two young ladies front of religious man. His curiously looks easily recognizable about a lady what's doing with other "no scarfed" ladies? Excellent capture as its subject and blurry part from movement. Congratulations.
Best Regards,

exceptional!
this is what i call "multilayered sight"... where photo touches more than one action in the same time, where these two (or more) moments complement each other...(even if they are contrasting)
superb work!

Bonjour Catherine,
ambiance sympa, moderne ... actuelle !
mes amitiés
daniel
