Changi Airport - Terminal 3

Today’s posting is another addition to the theme “World Great Airports”. This time I would like to introduce Singapore’s Changi Airport newest terminal. It is Terminal 3 and was opened to service in January 2008.

The picture shows a view of Terminal 3 main central hall with its unique roof architecture which allows soft natural light into the building while keeping the tropical heat out. The one-of-its-kind roof design has 919 skylights with specially designed reflector panels which automatically adjust themselves to allow an optimal amount of soft and uniform daylight into the terminal building. At night, the skylights glow with artificial lighting delicately concealed below the reflector panels. The overall effect is a soothing ambience at all times of the day.

Another major feature of Terminal 3 is the five-storey high vertical garden, called the “The Green Wall”. Spanning 300 metres across the main building, it can be admired from both the Departure and Arrival Halls. The “Green Wall” is covered with 25 species of climbing plants and is combined with four cascading waterfalls surrounded by tall palm trees and a huge variety of beautiful orchids. In WS you can see one of the water falls which is to the right of the piano in the main posting.

I love this picture with all the colours, never been to Singapore myself I believe it is a lovely place for a holiday. Also your picture - Blue Sky – is fantastic, I sit hear and look at the Gallery and do not know what photo I like the best there is so many fantastic pictures to look at, one need more time then I think most of us have to go through all of them. Thanks for a lot of beautiful picture.

Hi Antonio,
One of the things I like about the tiny country of Singapore is they do everything so well. I've been watching Terminal 3 being built for some time now but have not managed to see it completed.
It looks great, makes Sydney International look a bit secondhand. Thanks for the shot of the interior.

Hi Antonio, It is a marvellous airport. Your POV and cropping show a lot of interesting details.It is certainly one of the top 3 airports in the world. If only Sydney airport could operate in such an efficient and courteous manner as this place. Here we pay high fees and get second rate service. TFS. Murray.

Olá Antonio,
Gostei deste panorama, cores suaves, plantas, flores,linda cascata, assim dá prazer esperar 2 ou 3 horas no aeroporto.
O aeroporto daqui de Boston é tão feio e deprimente comparado com este.
Realmente foi uma grande decepção quando pisei pela primeira vez este aeroporto.
Eu penso que não se preocuparam muito com a estética ou beleza,foram mais práticos e só procuraram a efeciência.
O mesmo acontece com os subways, são tão feios e deprimentes que dá uma sensação desagradavel só de pensar em descer as escadas.

tu trabajo sobre los grandes aeropuertos del mundo es simplemente extraordinario, gracias a tus fotos podemos conocer estos grandes edificios y en muchos casos, como aquí, una magnífica y útil arquitectura, que explicas detalladamente en tu nota cómo se ha diseñado y cómo funciona.
Este encuadre es perfecto y nos da una idea de la grandiosidad del aeropuerto, de su elegancia y de su dinamismo.

A geometria da arquitectura presente até na própria decoração.Um espaço aberto em que previligia a luz e onde se previligia a cultura. Parece-me sem dúvia de um terminal agradável de se ver. Pelo menos aqui as esperas até poderão ser agradáveis. A foto está com umas boas cores.

Uma boa perspectiva com uma luz muito boa! Gosto daquele piano ao centro, um detalhe algo invulgar num aeroporto. Eles deixam tirar fotos lá? Vou passar por aí em Novembro quando for ao Vietname, mas acho que nem vou ter tempo para fotos.

Light is apparently good thanks to the skylights you mention. Two thinks of interest for me here: the huge space (with surprisingly not so many people), and the vegetation, which is unusual but very nice. The piano in the foreground is also unusual!

Impressionante sem dúvida, António. A presença de verde fresco num espaço destes é muito bem vinda e contribuirá para descontrair muitas almas cansadas de longas viagens. O detalhe da água no WS é espectacular. A composição aqui está muito boa com a diagonal curva deste palco a orientar a imagem toda.

que belo aerporto esse, parece um Shopping center. Bem diferente dos bagunçados e feios aerportos brasileiros, o turista chega e já fica com uma má impressão do país, mas parece que vão resolver o problema, estão privatizando eles.

Thanks so much for showing this beautiful terminal and for the informative note.
Most travelers (I included) normally ignore
to observe the airports which is our first entrance to our destination.
This airport is definately a state-of-the-art terminal full of modern art and great symmetry. At least, the beautiful infrastructure of this place will make it less stressful if your flight is delayed!

Your series of the great Airport Terminals is really artistic and pedagogically worthwhile. The Changi Airport is unusual and imaginative. It eh piano performed frequently, or are there occasional concerts.

airports always fascinate me with ther architectural details... this one looks lie a beautiful one, with a warm human touch... i mean that piano looks great out there, i would have loved to hear it play when i was trying to reach somewhere in a hurry may be... your shot is taken from a good pov to show a lot in there antonio... lacks a bit os sharpness may be but still very nice...

Trata-se de uma foto muito bela e impressionante do interior desse aeroporto! Como gosto muito de viajar (inclusive de avião) o ambiente aéreo, como o dos aeroportos, atrai-me bastante!
Nitidez, cores e a exata quantidade e qualidade da luz na imagem fazem desta fotografia algo muito interessante e agradável!

Parece realmente ser um terminal muito bonito, talvez bem mais acolhedor que a maioria dos aeroportos, apesar de ser imenso. Gosto muito da forma como o mostras, fizeste uma bela compo jogando com as formas arrendondadas e os padrões do chão e do tecto.

Excelente esta perspectiva geral do terminal com belos detalhes para serem observados, desde logo o chão, e os detalhes no tecto do mesmo, esta estrutura em madeira, o piano, realmente é um tipo de abordagem bem diferente daquelas que se podem ver por cá.
Gosto da sensação de movimento que conseguiste recriar através da velocidade mais baixa, embora me pareça que perdeste um pouco nos detalhes mais finos, mas a verdade é que não se pode ter tudo e mesmo assim há muita coisa interessante para apreciar.

Quem diria que terminais de aeroporto podem dar belas fotos (incluindo o WS). E já não é a primeira vez.
Interessante nota.
Estava a pensar porque é que não há mais sítios como Singapura no chamado terceiro mundo.
De repente a foto fez-me lembrar o já derrubado Palast der Republik na ex-RDA.

Changi Airport was from the beginning a much more imaginative airport compared to Melbourne's and now with these new innovations it makes the Melb. airport look like a poor cousin's clumsy attempt to be modern.I love the colours and the details in your work, due to a large extent to your well chosen POV. Magnifico aeroporto com esta vegetação no interior um bom lugar para as pessoas de descontraírem até tem um piano , gostei do contraste entre o chão de madeira e o de mosaicos o de Lisboa podia ser mais ou menos assim parecido ,bom enquadramento da foto , parabéns!!

To take a good photo of an airport terminal is not easy, but you have succeeded! Excellent photo. And in places like Singapore the orchids of course makes the interiour very nice. Did you see any dachshounds run around, sniffing for drugs?
