Photographer’s Note

This photo may soon become a historical document, as the glacier you see down below is melting rapidly. When I fist saw it, some 30 years ago, the Pasterze - that´s the name of the glacier - had maybe three times as much ice as it has today, so in maximum 20 years it will be gone.
Neverthess responsibility for this process can´t be given to greenhouse gases and traffic alone, it appears to be a general climate change in that area. In 1850 the ice reached almost up to the building on the photo, now it´s almost 300 meters below. It had been consistently melting thoughout this period, maybe even longer, but there are no records that reach beyond 1850.
The mountain on the left is the Grossglockner, the highest mountain of Austria, reaching 3798 meters. The effect of the wide angle makes it look less spectacular than in reality, the difference in altitude between the glacier and the summit is around 1.800 meters.
