Photographer’s Note

Underneath Taormina is isola beautiful (that is this that we see), a small barren island that in low tide lays a sand way with the beach, and in the environs we will prune to visit the Garglantas de Alcántara, incredible basaltic formation in the form of defile.

Taormina is without doubt one of Sicilian jewels. It is certain well that tourist over-exploitation has derived in an agglomeration of peculiar foreigners who shake the life of the 10,000 inhabitants of the city.

Located to two hundred meters of height, on Monte Tauros, a expléndida natural terrace, Taormina, the old Tauromerion colony, founded by colonists fled from saqueda Naxos on the 403 a. C, was devastated by Siracusa, hired by the Romans, and capital of the island by a brief period of Byzantine Sicily. From his taking by the Normen in 1078 to century XVIII, it did not happen to be a calm town of coast. As of the 1700, writers English Germans and like Bartlett and Goethe that empredían circuits of inspiration by Europe, stopped by Taormina. Even so, she would not be until the 1866 when railroad one the city with Mesina, facilitating the access of tourists of the North of Europe, some as illustrious as the emperor ale mán Guillermo II.

Cradle of the rests of some of the most important writers of century XX like Truman Capote, Tenessee Williams, Thomas Mann or Cocteau among others, and of artists like Greta Garbo, Cary Grant, Dalí, Orson Welles or rita Hayworth, Taormina has stopped being a place of reflection to comprise of one of the axes of tourist glorification of Sicily.
