Mirror of Clouds and Forest

Hartley Pond
Hartley Park
Duluth, Minnesota.

Hartley Park is one of Duluth's many large city parks. One of the most wonderful things about Duluth is how the North Woods are brought into and through the city itself.

This park was originally a farm on the outskirts of the city. The farm was abandoned after being rezoned and annexed into the city. Once it was abandoned the city claimed the land and turned it into a large park.

Hartley park is 660 acres of forested hills and wetlands with some incredible views and a large trail system. On our first visit to the park we ended up walking a cross country ski trail through a thick bit of forest .. I left thinking .. where were the scenic views people were raving about .. we found them on our second visit.

The centerpiece of the park is the Hartley Nature Center which has numerous activities and programs throughout the year: http://www.hartleynature.org/

It is hard to imagine this lovely spot is in the middle of a city.
The beautiful clouds look even more impressive as they reflect in the calm lake as they contrast beautifully with the lush green late summer shoreline.

So, this is one of Duluth's city parks... unbelievable! It must've been hard to leave such a wonderful state like Colorado but, judging from what you're showing us, your new surroundings ain't "too bad" either, right?

Beautiful detail in both the photographer's sky and its reflection, great clarity of colors and a framing that has such great DOF that the view seems to go on forever.
Interesting note as well. How is Andrew handing the transition. I expect the walks help a lot.

Hi John,
You continue amazing us with the beauty of the parks of your new city. It's quite a surprise finding that these views were shot inside a city park. The sense of expanse and clarity are immense and make the image very catchy. The way that the clouds are scattered helps the sense of depth already produced by the placement of the border. I like a lot how the submerged stones mix with the reflection of the clouds on the FG.

Very nice picture, with a really excellent refelction. "Mirror" is well deserved here. The sky is rich with the combination of blue color and clouds, and very nice greens to.

Superb use of the wide angle here...the reflections of the clouds on the pond water, separated from the sky by that thin girdle of green is excellent. I don't think you used a polariser here...normally you do! I have taken liberty to do a little PP to your wonderful image...just some curves & selective colour with blue. I hope you don't mind.
