Photographer’s Note
Icaraí is the name of a beach and its surrounding neighborhood in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The word Icarahy, in the ancient language tupi-guarani, is composed by I (water) and Carahy (blessed).
A beach american football team called the Niterói Warriors plays there.
Icaraí is Niteroi's district with the highest life quality. It has many residential buildings and houses. It's an arboreous area, where it's located the Campo de São Bento, a kind of park where people ride their bikes, read, make exercises or just apreciate the view. The park has more movement on Sundays, when the inhabitants enjoy the weakend to take their kids to see the lakes with ducks and fishes, to eat some of the delicacies sold by the many stands or to play.
Icaraí is also an area with good commerce, that attends to the inhabitants' needs. Sports are practiced on the sand of the beach, where people play the beach volley or beach football, or walk.
The district has many young people, so the nightlife is considerably active. Nightclubs like Waxy or Saideira, bars like the Barkanas and so on make the fun of youths. But the most famous nightly point is not located in Icaraí - that's the Cantareira, where the bohemian find themselves and sit in one of the many bars. Cantareira is particularly full of students (the Fluminense Federal University campi are all around Cantareira) and people getting out of work, who want to make a "happy hour". The most famous of Niteroi's night clubs, at the moment, is also situed at Cantareira, and it's named Happy News. The club has became quickly popular for its philosophy of fun, with childhood musics, people using fansy clothes dancing on the counter and the tequila that is served freely to people in line (named the Tequila Train). All night clubs in Niteroi are full of Icaraí people, who go around the city looking for fun. And after the night life, when the dawn is almost coming to an end, young people use to go a snack bar next to the Icaraí beach, named Ponto Jovem. That's a point where all young people can be found after the nightclubs.
São Vicente school is located in Icaraí, just like pH and MV1. The AMF Unimed space offers many plays, and a Fluminense Federal University unity next to the beach offers cultural programs.
The district also has pretty good bars, like the São Nunca, a bar at the Icaraí beach, or the Barkanas, where many young people meet for drinking beer or watching football games on TV.
The gymnasium Caio Martins is located next to Icaraí. The gymnasium usualy offers shows. More recently, a chinese circus has showed up there.
The Icaraí beach has faced problems with water polution. But the beaches are full of people making exercises, promenading, taking their dogs for a walk or just laid down, sunning.
The district also has many fitness centers and beauty parlours, what shows the fondness of people for beauty. Many fashion shops and malls can be found in Icaraí, the quarter with the highest stard of living in the city. There's also a cinema and all kind of stores. The main fastfood can be found at the area and there are many pizza restaurants in almost every street.
