Photographer’s Note
Sagrada Familia’s Nativity Facade
The Temple of la Sagrada Familia, Barcelona’s surreal, unfinished church also known as Gaudi’s church was begun in 1882.
This awesome cathedral 110 meters in length and 45 meters high, with three fronts each bearing four towers for a total of 12 is dedicated to the Apostles. Its two colossal domes are dedicated to the Virgin and Christ respectively, the latter reaching a height of 170 meters. Work on the cathedral stopped in 1936 due to the outbreak of Civil War. During the war, Gaudi’s study containing plans and drawings was destroyed by fire. With the persistence of his followers and models saved from the fire, work on the cathedral started again in 1952. Through generations of architects since Gaudi began work, the current prediction for overall completion of the church is 2025.
Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926) was 31 years old when he started work la Sagrada Familia. This endeavor became his life’s work. He lived like a recluse on the site and is buried in the crypt in the cathedral.

Hello Betty,
In this shot with superb resolution and composition, you make a compelling case for how the Gaudi Cathedral differs from all others. I visited the same site two weeks after you, spending most of the day with José Pires and his family. Gaudi's Sagredo Family Church was certainly the highlight of the Barcelona visit. Your note is highly informative (and well written) as usual.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hi, Betty,
What a superbly sharp and naturally coloured photo of this extraordinary alcove in an extraordinary building. So much more informative than the pictures in the book about Gaudi which my husband gave me one Christmas. I am interested to see the colour of the stone - apparently it has very similar characteristics to the pink sandstone from the Clashach quarry which has been used for a lot of recent buildings in Edinburgh, also for the stone in my In memoriam photo.
Thanks,
Winifred
