Photographer’s Note
It's better to burn out than to fade away (Neil Young).
The place is again Egernsund, a small town of 1600 inhabitants beautifully located in South Jutland between the waters of Flensburg Fjord and Nyboel Nor, where in the local shipyard this dock is quietly fading away. I am fascinated by all stages of decay and therefore it is rust, this electrochemical reaction where iron and oxygen combine, that always catches my eyes. Since iron and oxygen have chemically opposite charges, they are continually attracted to one another and seek to combine and form rust, an amazing process! Sheet metal in its natural unpainted state is extremely vulnerable to rust since it exposes untreated metal to salt, rain, humidity and temperature changes, so this harbour is a perfect place for never sleeping rust!. Painted sheet metal alas, is only a little more protected. The blue boat (my last image), made of plastic, is not in danger.
Egernsund shipyard is a very interesting place. It was one beautiful example of a wooden sailing ship, the “Dagmar Aaen”, the famous ship of Mr. Arved Fuchs, the polar explorer, that has recently undergone extensive restoration at this shipyard in readying it for future polar navigation and expeditions.

Guten Tag Harriet
A fantastic warm vs cold colour contrast, with good sharpness & lighting contrasts. The fg bench at right adds superb lead in lines. Tfs!

Hello Harriet,
What a strange facination you have for rust. You must take more anti-oxidants to avoid the same thing happening in your own body....I digress.
Quite an interesting almost abstract capture you have here, in the thumbnail I thought it may have been a submarine but now, I have no idea what these things are.
Nothing wrong with the shot, it's just weird!!!

Hi Harriet,
Even the chemical reaction between iron and oxygen can create quite beautiful results for the open-minded photographer. But that is certainly a peculiar construction here behind the rust!

Hello Harriet,
So what is this? A submarine, some equipment for making beer or whisky, an old-fashioned UFO? Whatever, it's weird and somehow beautiful and rather photogenique against the water and the blue sky.

Bonjour Harriet,
industriel et rouillé mais beaucoup d'impact coloré dans ce vert et ce bleu plus nature.
Ce n'est pas banal comme sujet, bien commenté.

Hello Harriet,
The first glance, that resembles antiques submarines forgotten with quay. An excellent image and a remarkable exploitation of the colors, which are sober.
Have a nice sunday

Hi Harriet,
Besides rust this has interesting cylindrical forms. Quite special place, I wonder if they let it stay like that for long. Could be brighter though. And maybe a wide angle closer PoV would be a good idea to show nearest details closer.

Harriet, the rust is certainly a fine topic on this one but it is also interesting that it is the smallest floating dry dock I have ever seen. It sinks to go beneath the hull then is pumped out to float it high and dry. It would be fine to see it in action. Fine color and details as always.

Hallo Harriet,
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hi Harriet, A very interesting photo & note, I am assuming this is a small submarine. I live in an English town that builds subs for the English navy, so this picture caught my eye, I worked at the ship yard a lot of years ago & assisted in building parts for subs, but your don't wish to hear about my history I'm sure, this is a nicely shot piece of work, the lighting is excellent & really shows off the subjects well, great natural colour & the overall composition is superb, TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Hello Harriet
Une belle lumière pour faire un beau mariage des couleurs bleues et rouille. Une drôle de construction dont l'utilité n'est pas évidente mais qui ne manque pas de charme.
Une bonne photo et une note intérressante

Well done you have managed to make something ordinary very interesting. Colour & detail excellent.

Hi Harriet,
I like this brown-blue composition with this strange rusty vessel.
Neil Young said it right. In Holland we should say: “Rust Roest” and that is something like “Hellere slides op end ruste op” if I can trust Lars’ dictionary

Hello Harriet,
The image gives this creepy graveyard feeling, even if there are only some pieces of rusty machinery!
Good point of view adding fine lines to composition, fine details in the subject(s)...
Personally I find sunlit rust to be an attractive colour, here
standing well out against the blue sea!

Very rusty scene as you say with the abandoned feel very well seen here. Superb colours and composition, it is a shame these places are left behind, however it looks like a scene where one can go and enjoy the peacefulness.

Hi Harriet,
The ferris oxide contrast brilliantly with the vivid blue sky.
This old iron hulk makes a nice reflection in the blue water while its purpose alludes me.
In rural North America many old farnhouses and barns can be seen in varying degrees of decay due to the small family farms giving way to the giant farms.

Thank you for the physical recall on rust !!! Pretty patina of time on this metal reinforcement which creates an astonishing contrast with the remainder of the image. I like much the clearness of the photograph. Interesting glance.

Hi Harriet. Rust never looked this good and I suspect it never got such a serious description before. I do like the title and the note. The scene is a little surreal-all that rusting metal against the blue sky and clean waters. Regards. Klaudio.

hello Harriet,
your interesting note will make me look again at rust. I like this because of its ordinariness. What I mean by that is that you show that ordinary things can be most interesting. And coincidentally I recently set up a flickr group to encourage local photographers to photograph our town in all its ordinariness (warts and all). So we have decaying buildings, rust and so on.The countryside around here is very nice but it's interesting to take a hard look at the not so beautiful.
best regards,
Bev
