Photographer’s Note

It's better to burn out than to fade away (Neil Young).
The place is again Egernsund, a small town of 1600 inhabitants beautifully located in South Jutland between the waters of Flensburg Fjord and Nyboel Nor, where in the local shipyard this dock is quietly fading away. I am fascinated by all stages of decay and therefore it is rust, this electrochemical reaction where iron and oxygen combine, that always catches my eyes. Since iron and oxygen have chemically opposite charges, they are continually attracted to one another and seek to combine and form rust, an amazing process! Sheet metal in its natural unpainted state is extremely vulnerable to rust since it exposes untreated metal to salt, rain, humidity and temperature changes, so this harbour is a perfect place for never sleeping rust!. Painted sheet metal alas, is only a little more protected. The blue boat (my last image), made of plastic, is not in danger.

Egernsund shipyard is a very interesting place. It was one beautiful example of a wooden sailing ship, the “Dagmar Aaen”, the famous ship of Mr. Arved Fuchs, the polar explorer, that has recently undergone extensive restoration at this shipyard in readying it for future polar navigation and expeditions.
