Photographer’s Note
This is another picture from the beach at Vik, on the south coast of Iceland.
I was attracted to the ring of surf left by the breaking waves on the black volcanic sand.
The sea stacks in the top right of the picture are the famous Reynisdrangar, also visible here.
A little more info about Vík from Wikipedia:
The village Vík (full name Vík í Mýrdal) in the south of Iceland is indicated on road signs from a long distance (about 180 km from Reykjavík), despite its small size (about 300 inhabitants). It is an important service center for the inhabitants and tourists around the Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
A remarkable feature is the beautiful black beach with the Reynisdrangar, black basalt columns sculpted by the sea. A folk tale says that they are former trolls which were caught outside at dawn. The sea around them is rather wild and stormy, so travelers will not be surprised to discover a monument to the memory of drowned seamen at the beach. The American journal Islands Magazine counted this beach as one of the ten most beautiful beaches on Earth in 1991. The town is the wettest place in Iceland.
The near-by mountain Reynisfjall is very famous in ornithology circles. Many species of birds are to be seen there in summer, especially puffins. These may also be observed at the peninsula Dyrhólaey some kilometres away.
The village of Vík has another notable characteristic, one which may cause inconvenience to visitors. The risk of rainy days here is higher than in all the rest of Iceland.

Hello John,
Are you sure you went in USA, because you are still posting on Iceland ;-)
I am impressed with your series on Vik's beach. Even more because it is the kind of pictures I would like to practice. Here, I clearly understand why you were attracted by this white pattern on the dark sand and the stones pilars in the corners are bringing the little more appreciated.
When I will go back in Iceland, for sure Vik will be on my road.
Yves.

Hi John, another lovely image from Iceland. You have quite a lot of them. Now I can see(after a long analyze) why I like your images: you compose in very simalar way I do: get low, nice prominent foreground, lot of impact in the images. I like it. and I like this one too: the composition is spot on, the patterns, everything, great shot. I tried to desature my monitor and it also looks great in BW. Fandilitastic shot mate...

Hi John,
I´m sorry to have missed some of your jewels.. :)
here the moment is perfect..the wave drawing back, leaving some traces at the beach in an elegant circle, as an optically big counterweight to the steep rocks far out.
Excellent one, compliments, chris

John,
Another beautiful "black" composition, which produces an oddly "solid" feel from very transient elements - the froth, the sea, the clouds. Only the jagged sea stacks will be there in the same form five minutes later.
Nice one.

Hola John,
Creo que hay mucha fuerza expresiva en tus texturas, sobre todo en la espuma que deja atrás la ola y en la arena. Casi blanco y negro y con una gran riqueza de contrastes y tonalidades. La composición es también magnífica. Gran trabajo.
Saludos,
Mirari

Hi John,
This is a nicely achieved image. I thought for sure it was B&W until I opened the thumbnail and saw the lovely strip of blue and orange/pink sky on the horizon. This has a nice delay feature in that our attention is so immediately drawn by the foreground surf that it takes a few fractions of a second to notice the sea stacks. That effect is accentuated by your having placed them so close to the right frame.
All in all an excellent composition.
Cheers!
Bob G.

Hi John,
This picture looks like a B&W one ... but this is a colour one ! Incredible landscape. I love the point of view you chose. I love the contrast between the white foam and the black sand. I love the islands we can see in the right background and that break the horizon line. And I would love to go to Iceland one day ...

Olivier

Hi John, Great use of the wide angle to get in close to the ring of surf and take us right out to the "trolls" on the horizon. The reflection of the receding wave on the sand is good too. Without that there might have been too much black. Exposure must have been difficult with the black sand and bright sky? cheers, Steve

well well well, a wonderfull, very graphical image.
Furthermore a splendid use of extreme wide-angle.
The horizon is even fully level... even if at first sight it seemed not to me :-)

Hi John,
sorry for not being active at all lately, but it's getting frustrating the situation here on TE, with the server crashing down every 5 mins.
About this wonderful picture there's nothing much to say; the depth created positioning the horizon so high is amazing, with the great sky adding a dramatic impact the te compo. The black sand and the white pattern on it have created a beautiful contrast and it's the perfect starting point to discover the beauty of the compo, with the rocks placed on the right giving a nice point of focus. This is a flawless presentaion, as usual, and it's the kind of photography I'd like to practice. A fine work indeed John.
Cheers,
Igor

Bellissima immagine quasi in bianco e nero, se non fosse per il quel turchese del cielo. Il tutto con un effetto molto drammatico.

John,
the dark sand (?) almost goes over in the darkness of the sea. The slim bright sky goes over into the next darkness of the clouds. Exquisite appearance what makes the white foam of the water stand up even more. Obviously its form is the icing on the cake.
I first wondered a little bit about the not so straight horizon and found the explanation in your replay to Marc. Nothing bad, just interesting explanation.

Ciao John,
Ciao
Paolo

Hi John,
dark...so dark but absoltely fabulous! I love it because of the darkness and that small window of light in the horizon. Nature creating graphism by herself. Simply fantastic. I would love to see it one day myself. Heavy, dark ...special. Beauty manifestated differently. Not kitchy...just simple plain beauty. Unfortunately hidden for many.

Simply wonderful dear John. One of your best of that trip to Iceland, in my feeling. I mean they were all of such a great quality, but this, I don't know why, has a completely out-of-this-world effect. And yet it is the world, it is Vik. That foam in an arch, the amazing details of the sand, the almost b/w look, the glimpse of blue in the sky. Perfect. Bravo !
And we did not go to Iceland this year. I've had some health troubles, and very tired then of course, so we simply went off to Brittany. Next year, hopefully...
And sorry I deleted my pigeon pic after your comment, I actually was not very happy with some of it, like you pointed out. Sometimes I am too fast in posting...too impatient in working on them...I will try again.
I am a little less here with this and that, but will try to catch up on some of the work I have missed. Seems you had a great time in the USA !
Kind regards

Word "elegant" comes into mind, John. This is a style you could find in exclusive chocolate wrappingsand expensive wine labels ;-)
Almost no colour, very neatly organized framing, the foam(?) contrasting with black sand - it all contributes to the final effect. And what a space... I want a wide angle lens, pleeease!

My God, this is a *color* picture... Amazing foreground. That giant shell of salty foam is amazing. I also love how you caught that white area in the middle. It wouldn't work without it. Great composition!
