Photographer’s Note
- smal town | big town -
So we're stuck in a tourist town, with guys hustling us to make their daily living . . . and you can book these tours or lay on the beach and get fat and brown :)
So we went to the train station, and bought tickets (get there before 7:00!). The trains in Tunesia are good, people are kind and help you, the trains are clean and first class is good and cool.
I thought to take a taxi in El Jem to the amphitheatre, but already from the train I saw it was easy to find :) El Jem is a flat, rather small town. From the station, cross the square and take the left corner. Just follow the shops. What is good, is that El Jem is really a normal town. In Sousse, all normal shops have gone, and they all sell stuff you don't want . . . you don't need. Here in El Jem, the shops sell what the Tunisian people need.
After one last corner . . . this is what you see!
. . . Oh boy, you think, . . . hope the camera has enough battery power!!
part of my travelogue about Tunisia;
- sky -
- door -
- no hurry -
. . . .
PE2;
autolevels (let me know what you think of it!), crop, resize to 1250, unsharpmask (pixelsize 1,3), resize to 1000, unsharpmask (pixelsize 1,3), resize to 700, unsharpmask (pixelsize 1,3), added border and text.
About the post-processing;
! First time I used unsharp mask, and I feel it is much better than the sharpening tool, but it takes a long time to get the feel of what to do. Any advise is welcome!
Second; I used the auto levels here, and I have a feeling the picture is a bit too dark - but my screens are rather light, so I could do with some feedback here. I like the yellow on the shirt of the guy, it's bright and the amphitheatre also looks good, in the original the yellow was less . . .

Boy.............you need an exta pair of battries with you. I am sure you would buy them toady.
A street life of the daily scene.....and the man in yellow seems to be enjoying his cycling, right in the middle of the road.
The overcast sky, a street vendor and a lazy life.

Hi David! After being almost 3 months in Egypt last autumn, seing this photo makes me miss the place and the atmosphere of arabic culture even more. I have already been planning a trip to Tunisia or Morocco, after seeing your photos and reading your travelogue my plans are just coming more true in my mind. Thanks for the photo and very interesting note.
Have a nice day,
Jarkko

Hi David
Are you shy for not pushing until 299 Ko ? :)
Very nice scene indeed, good management with the lights exposure but it's a little bit too sharp.
Cheers.

I remember El Jem, David and it looks no different from when I saw it 30 years ago. Your shot captures the feel of the little so well.It shows how incongruously the great amphitheater rises up above the dusty streets. I like the locals in various actions of their daily life. As for the guy on the bike, I recently decided that people coming into the picture, that is facing the camera, rather than showing their backs looks more satisfying. However, the splash of yellow there is just right. Regards Kevin

I'm not convinced by this multi-step resizing/sharpening approach: I've not yet seen a result that's better than what you can get with a single resizing step. In this case, though, look at the edge of that guy's jeans - it's introduced a very hard white halo, making him look like a paper cut-out. I suggest you try a resize in one step; then unsharp mask with radius 0.4, about 65%; and see how that compares...
